Scouting the Chic Provence Design Tour

I love Provence so much; nothing is more fun to me than spending the week before the Chic Provence Design Tour scouting out all my locations, vendors and sights, meeting and greeting old friends and checking out new ones. I want everything to be perfect and to run smoothly for my guests from the minute they arrive until we return them a week later to the TGV in Avignon.

This then is how a typical day of pre-Tour scouting goes for me... come with me next time!

hmm.... Madame is offering fresh eggs right from her farm... I'll take a half dozen!
found these on my  morning walk along the banks of the River Sorgue

along with President butter, a fresh croissant
and blood oranges, these eggs made a
fabulous breakfast, giving me lots of energy
for a fully packed day of scouting in Provence!

of course, un petit pause for a fabulous cup of
coffee was in order as the morning went on...
here I am using my wonderful basket from
Andrea at The French Basketeer!  Thanks, Andrea!!

the summer linens in the Provençal markets always delight me...
and this spring I spied this chic little dress and scarf... paired with
a scarf and sandals, the perfect outfit for browsing the markets
in the South of France... and at 34 euro, a real bargain!

Steven and I headed to our favorite boulangerie... the one that makes everything on site, from scratch, using only the finest "bio" (organic) ingredients... we had to make sure everything was acceptable for our guests at the villa the following week... and yes, everything was!

even the baguettes as they rolled out of the ovens, their aroma just begging for un cafe au lait and a large smear of pure butter and jam!

OK, well fortified, it's off to scout les antiquaires... just to be sure nothing has changed drastically in the last year... we found so many gorgeous treasures we were sure our guests would be completely delighted! this small chandelier caught my eye and I could picture it in my guest room chez moi...

peeking into Madame's window, a row of fanciful dining chairs catches my eye, along
with that gorgeous chandelier and mirror...

these garden cloches will surely captivate my wonderful guests... wonder how many of
these will find their way back to the USA ?

a fancy candelabra called a girondole almost made its way into MY suitcase!
isn't it pretty?

the witty fish sculpture in company the otherwise seriously glamourous
objets is a hallmark of French design... don't take things too seriously!

I fell completely for this period oil painting of Louis XVI himself... pompous and
soft, he epitomized all the excesses that eventually got him into serious trouble... aka
the guillotine!  but I really loved this painting, and at 650 euros almost brought
it home to my French-history-loving husband Chris!

OK, back outside, and off to Gordes... just to be sure nothing has changed in this stunning
hilltop village since we were last there... and of course, it is just as gorgeous as always...we need
not have feared!

I always peek into the church in Gordes... this time preparations were underway
for a funeral mass for the oldest firefighter (pompier) in Gordes who had
passed away in his 80's... a procession wove through the village

side view of the chateau at Gordes... actually that is a very excellent
organic grocer tucked under those eaves...

back to our villa to check things out... the olive
tree basking in the late afternoon sun...

...the outdoor mantel a study in still life....

the breakfast kitchen inviting us in for
un cafe under the wisteria arbor...

still the perfect spot for morning breakfast and lingering...

..and putting the final touches on the gifts for
each of my treasured guests when they arrive...
fine chocolates, pate de fois gras, candle,
lavender oil and a sweet bundle of lavender
to tuck under the pillow for a good night's sleep!

Christmas Chez Nous

Lovely Christmastime is here again! This year I was inspired by the light... since we've had a nice little run of really good weather,  the light has not been gloomy and dark, even for Winter Solstice time. I wanted to capture the pretty light of day and infuse our home with it's cheerfulness even at night.

Using things found, I pulled together our Christmas home in no time at all... the perfect setting for our Christmas Eve dungeness crab feast and Christmas morning brunch.

Hoping your holiday is filled with light, warmth, love and peace!

this simple green wreath adorned only with pinecones
is a refreshing sight in front of the mirror

the Christmas tree peeking around the corner to
see what all the fuss in the dining room is!

the mantel holds fresh white tulips in vintage glass

the mid-century star keeps company with the
rare pink coral and the silver fish on the
windowsill

the lovely Christmas Tree 2011! I just wanted to use
green and white, and these giant balls were the
perfect choice (from my stash of ornaments, that is!);
I tucked white starfish in the branches
and we're done!

this old French painting of a battle scene (inherited!)
sets a somber & serious tone... so I used
antique paper Chinese lanterns,  pink peonies and
Mexican angels
to lighten the mood; flanking the painting are
 wrought iron peacock door panels

silver pitchers holding peonies reflect
the light and bounces in back into the room

dining room is ready for the festivities!

I started to create a flowery centerpiece then I decided I
really like the simple beauty of the
way the bottles of water capture and disperse the light
and left it at that

Christmas place settings using vintage pieces:
French flea market silverware,
the dishes (you've certainly seen a lot of those Minton
dishes I scored at l'Isle sur la Sorgue last Easter!)
 and the heavy 60's goblet

Shipment from l'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Brocante Est Arrivee!!

Although it was a few weeks ago, I can still feel the excitement I felt when I uncrated my treasures when they arrived from Provence. When the shipper called (finally!.. I had been waiting for months!) I made quite sure to be home the day and appointed hour of the arrival of these huge shipping crates... and was as excited as I get at Christmastime!

Here are my wonderful brocante finds from l'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue... frankly, it's not a lot, but it is packed as if it were an art treasure from the Louvre!

here are all three jugs... aren't they beautiful? I love the
original pear shape, and the last one still has the vestiges
of the red wine that was stored in it... beautiful relics of
a long ago time in Provence

this incredible wine jug is one of three I bought and
shipped home... it's a huge, 26" tall hand-blown
vintage Provençal wine jug from between the
two world wars

yes, if you look closely, you will see that the tag is
still on the jug from the flea market... and yes, it
cost only 45 euros! or about $60... incredible price!

next box contained the 11 vintage Minton china luncheon plates I
found at the flea market; here they are wrapped and packed
within an inch of their lives!

these stunning plates (OK, I'm a plate-aholic:) are each with
a different pattern, and all exquisitely hand-painted... I really think
they are quite beautiful, and since I found them at the end
of the flea market, I was able to get them for 80 euros, instead of
the original 500 euros the vendor was asking!

Are they stupendous?

***

yep, this very large well-constructed crate carried
three glass jugs and 11 luncheon plates from France
to my backyard with nothing broken... the crates
have since been recycled for a local Woodside
production of South Pacific... perfect, non?

What do you think of my treasures?
Come with me next time... I'm
planning another trip in Spring 2012..
details to follow!

then, just to keep the fun coming, I received my order for these
beautiful, smooth white linen euro pillow covers from
my friend Tricia Rose at Rough Linen! look at her
artful packaging!

the cases are truly wonderfully linen, smooth and cool to
the touch; here I have them in one of our salles des amis
to be enjoyed by our next house guest!

I think I could just curl up right here with a good book
and let the world pass me by for a few hours... these
pillows are so sumptuous and inviting now!

You can order from Tricia these amazing all linen bedclothes:
duvets, pillow slips, sheets... as well as table cloths, curtains and napkins...
be sure to visit her wonderful website... you
will love whatever it is you order from her... I've seen it all!

PS Tricia was featured in Martha Stewart Living!

PPS Tricia lives right on the water (north San Francisco Bay inlet)
in a very charming cottage she has
decorated in an amazingly refreshing way... I will be doing a
blog post about her home soon!

The Brocante at Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Flea markets are the same the world over. Vendors are often more interested in each other's gossip than in selling stuff to you:) Sellers have always "just left" to get coffee, leaving their neighbor to watch their stall just when you desperately want an item. Lunchtime rolls around and all vendors everywhere pull out delectable lunches they have brought in, only to make you notice your hunger pangs as you settle for a local skyrocket-priced carnival food. And, of course, everywhere there is much posturing and haggling over prices... all part of the fun!

The brocante in l'Isle sur la Sorgue at Easter was just like all the rest of the flea markets I've been to... except for the things you can buy, the setting, and... yes, the lunches. This was not our local Alemany Flea with corn dogs on a stick!

We had an unforgettable adventure there on the Chic Provence Design Tour... come with us next spring!

the entrance to the park where the flea market is held
in Isle sur la Sorgue, France

OK so we did just fine for lunch...here at
the Cafe de France!

we drooled over these hand blown wine jugs from
the early 20 C....and one of us bought one

this 19th C small rug is now a table runner for
one of our Tour attendees...isn't it beautiful!

great old planters were everywhere

the statue and the setting are so elegant..wait
until those vines are filled out and blooming!

loved this little grouping of vibrantly upholstered
furniture...looks like Designer's Guild

I think these are hitching posts...and not
sure what the curvy iron is..but love it!

original tile floor in one of the
buildings in town

metal cafe chairs, always chic!

rusted old garden statuary

highly styled mid-century stall

I love "terre melee" and this vase is
a superb example of the mixed clay
technique from Vallauris

funny little mid-century Michelin Tire guys!
(what are they up to anyway?)

the selection of vintage silver was phenomenal
at this stall

this wonderful Gustavian bench would look
great with cushions in a Swedish frame of mind

more tile floor from around town

pillow covers made from vintage
French sheets and grain sacks

love this navy and white tile floor

the magical view up the Sorgue River
